  • Drinking water from an improved source
  • Improved santition facilities, which are single-sex and usable at the school
  • Functional Handwashing facilities which have water and soap at points of care, within 5 metres of toilets

  2. Proportion of schools with a basic sanitation service
  3. Proportion of schools with a basic hygiene service

WASH in Schools service levels are calculated based on responses, and then schools are classified on the JMP WASH in Schools Service Ladder for further analysis:

Note
Improved sources include piped water, boreholes or tubewells, protected dug wells, protected springs and packaged or delivered water. Unimproved sources include unprotected wells, unprotected springs and surface water.
Note
Improved facilities include flush/pour flush toilets, ventilated improved pit latrines, composting toilets and pit latrines with a slab or platform. Unimproved facilities include pit latrines without a slab or platform, hanging latrines and bucket latrines.
Note
Handwashing facilities may be fixed or mobile, and include a sink with tap water, buckets with taps, tippy-taps and jugs or basins designated for handwashing. Soap includes bar soap, liquid soap, pow- der detergent and soapy water but does not include ash, soil, sand or other handwashing agents.

Service levels and priority indicators are monitored at national, regional, and global levels.

How users act on data Data is used to:
  • Influence policy, program interventions, and national development plans
  • Monitor Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) progress / other global commitments
  • Compare school WASH services nationally, regionally and globally
  • Influence public perception on national and global school WASH service statuses
How users create reports aligned with the standard

Reporting is coordinated at the country level by national statistical offices and key sector institutions (i.e. ministries of water, sanitation and hygiene, regulators of sanitation and hygiene services). JMP uses national data to produce internationally comparable estimates of coverage and progress on WASH in schools. The tabulation guide shown below is explained in detail within the in the Core questions and indicators for monitoring WASH in Schools in the Sustainable Development Goals document:

Where users submit reports Harmonized national, regional and global baseline estimates and progress reports from 2015 and 2019 are included in the JMP Progress on Drinking Water Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools 2020 update.

Reports are submitted to national statistics offices and ministries of education. These offices are usually also responsible for SDG monitoring and reporting.
