The principle of a Hydraulic Ram pump. Water flowing down the drive pipe speeds up until the water pushes the waste valve closed. The water in the pipe is still moving, and for a short time creates a high pressure in the pump body (water hammer effect), which causes a small amount of water to be pumped through the check valve to the air chamber. The air in the air chamber pushes the water up the delivery pipe, to a height which can be 20 times larger than the height difference of the drive pipe.
