Plus le volume du réservoir de stockage est important, plus la demande matérielle et les coûts de la construction par m3 du volume du réservoir sont faibles.
En Afrique australe, un système coûte 320 dollars. Il se compose de 11 m de gouttière de fer galvanisé, un réservoir de fer galvanisé de 1,3 m3, un tuyau de descente, un robinet et des filtres. Ce coût ne comprend pas les frais de transport. Lorsque les toits ne sont pas adaptés à la récupération de l'eau, le coût de l'amélioration du toit et des gouttières devra être ajouté au coût d'un réservoir.
