This is a floodwater harvesting technique called '''controlled flooding''', where the water diverted from a river with the help of diversion structures and canals is spread evenly over a large surface area, known as '''spreading basins''', where it is used for recharging groundwater, irrigation, filling ponds, and watering grazing land. The concept is that a thin sheet of water flows over the land but at minimum velocity in order to avoid disturbing the soil cover. This includes [[Irrigation_-_Spate_irrigation|spate irrigation]], but also standard channel irrigation which takes river water via channels to fields.
यह नियंत्रित बाढ़ संचयन की एक ऐसी तकनीक है, जिसके माध्यम से बाढ़ को नियंत्रित करके पानी को पहले नदी की ओर मोड़ा जाता है और फिर विभिन्न संरचनाओं के माध्यम से इसे नहर, तालाब और भूजल संरक्षण में उपयोग किया जाता है. इस पानी का उपयोग भूजल पुनर्भरण, नहरों, तालाबों को भरने, पशुओं के चरने के लिए हरे-भरे मैदानों और कृषि योग्य भूमि के लिए किया जाता है. इस तकनीक के माध्यम से जल के बहाव को काफी कम कर दिया जाता है जिससे मिट्टी के ऊपरी परत को नुकसान नहीं होता है. अतिवृष्टि वाले क्षेत्रों में भी इस तकनीक का उपयोग करके वर्षा जल को पहले नदियों और फिर खेतों की ओर मोड़ दिया जाता है, जिससे मिट्टी को नुकसान नहीं पहुंचता है और हरियाली भी बनी रहती है.
